ABOUT JASON
Jason Smith has served as an Assistant District Attorney in New Hanover and Pender Counties since 2010. During his tenure in the office, Jason has handled all manner of cases, ranging from white collar crimes to sexual assaults and homicides. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, Jason had his own law practice and worked for Webb & Graves, focusing on business, tax, and estate law at both firms. He also served as corporate counsel for Coastal Discount Stockbrokers.
An Alabama native, Jason earned a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Virginia Military Institute. He met his wife, Tamara, in college and the couple moved to Wilmington following their graduation from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1999. They have four children – Vivian, Martha, Tucker, and Evelyn.
In addition to his public service in our region, Jason served in the United States Army Reserve as a Captain as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Officer. In 2003 he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Jason was an Executive Officer and platoon leader for the 413th Chemical Company for 15 months, until his honorable discharge from the Army as a Captain in 2005.
When he is not at work or spending time with family, Jason volunteers for several organizations, including as a member of the Wilmington Christian Academy School Board member and as a Deacon at Grace Baptist Church. He has coached both Pop Warner Football and with the Topsail Youth Lacrosse Association. Jason was also a Board member for A Safe Place, and regularly speaks to student and parent groups about internet safety, social media safety, and making sound decisions.
Value Statement
As your elected District Attorney, I will put my experience as a prosecutor and leadership in the military to work for the citizens of New Hanover and Pender Counties. The Office of the District Attorney will prioritize violent crimes such as homicides, crimes against children, sexual assaults, domestic violence, and human trafficking. I will also ensure that victims’ rights are upheld, and that law and order is maintained through the strict enforcement of the criminal statutes. I will lead the Office of the District Attorney in our pursuit of justice and the efficient management of criminal cases. Finally, I will encourage community engagement efforts to strengthen relationships with the public and to build trust in the criminal justice system. I would appreciate and be honored for your support of this endeavor.

Advising Law Enforcement & Prosecuting Crimes
Being the spearhead of engaging our business leaders government leaders, educators, non-profit organizations, and faith based leaders to evolve our efforts to curtail crime and victimization.
Engage our community leaders to ensure and maintain trust between the citizens and the law enforcement community.
Will focus on prosecuting the worst people who do the worst crimes: murderers, sexual crimes, violent criminals (to include gang violence), crimes against children, crimes against the elderly, domestic violence, drug traffickers.
I will continue to protect and serve my community and those victims of all crimes, no matter the severity.
This involves internal case management & collaborating with criminal justice partners like law enforcement, judges, & defense attorneys to increase the speed of resolving cases.
